Measuring and verifying industry energy efficiency projects in Indonesia

In late 2018, Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) contacted the USAID mission in Jakarta with a specific request for expertise on measurement & verification (M&V) of energy efficiency projects undertaken by the private sector.

Objective

In February of 2019, Berkeley Lab expert Peter Therkelsen participated in an “M&V Standards Workshop” organized by USAID in Jakarta for MEMR and other stakeholders.  He also met with other stakeholders to develop a scope of work for future activities including:

  • Acceleration of uptake of ISO 50001 energy management systems in Indonesian industrial and commercial sectors
  • Develop M&V protocols that supports national energy savings determination interests and accelerated ISO 50001 adoption
  • Develop M&V workforce expertise through in-country trainings

Outcome

The outcome of this activity was a detailed prospective work plan on these areas, which was forwarded to USAID in Jakarta for consideration. The work plan included a scoping tour by E3 to the Indonesia mission in the summer of 2019. In February 2019, Peter Therkelsen of LBNL traveled to Jakarta for meetings focusing on the topics of project level Monitoring and verification for ESCOs and ISO 50001 energy management systems.
